I went to St Anne’s infants school and then St Francis Xavier school. Many people don’t know there was a playground on the roof. You could see the planes flying by in the war, watching them go along the river.

Very nice schools they were. I was good at maths. I wasn’t very well behaved.
My best mate was Capaldi, his dad owned an ice cream parlour. That was great for me. I remember getting posh ice cream from his place. He was a big kid – for obvious reasons!
The nit nurse used to come round the school and sort out our nits as well as well as scabies.
